The change in sentiment has developed over several years.

In 2021, only 31% of Americans aged 18–29 said they were more concerned than excited about AI. That figure increased to 39% in 2024, 47% in 2025 and reached 55% in 2026.

At the same time, excitement about AI has declined. The percentage of young adults who said they were more excited than concerned fell from 19% in 2024 to just 11% in 2026.

This suggests that increasing familiarity with AI may not necessarily be producing greater enthusiasm. Instead, direct exposure to AI's potential consequences could be making younger people more cautious.

AI Job Loss Fears Are a Major Factor

One of the biggest concerns surrounding artificial intelligence is its potential impact on employment.

Young adults are particularly worried that increasingly capable AI systems could automate tasks currently performed by human workers. According to the research reported by Indian Express, the percentage of Americans under 30 who believe AI will result in fewer jobs over the next two decades has increased from 61% in 2024 to 73% in 2026.

Interestingly, concern among people aged 18–29 has continued rising while attitudes among some older age groups have been relatively more stable.

In 2026, 55% of adults aged 18–29 expressed greater concern than excitement, compared with 51% of those aged 30–49, 47% of those aged 50–64 and 59% of people aged 65 and older.

Why Are Young People Becoming More Skeptical of AI?

Several factors may explain the changing attitude.

1. Fear of Job Displacement

Employment is arguably the biggest concern. Young people entering the workforce may worry that AI could reduce opportunities before they have established themselves professionally.

2. Rapid Development of AI

AI capabilities have advanced extremely quickly. Generative AI can now produce text, images, software code and other forms of content, making the technology feel less theoretical and more directly connected to people's careers.

3. Uncertainty About the Future
